October 2013 Runabouts to Rockets

In previous messages it has been mentioned that the Olds “network” is vital for finding parts, services, and repair information. Recently, I took advantage of this network to help complete the wiring installation on my current restoration project—a 1950 Olds “98” convertible. I was lucky enough to have five different experts (all NAOC members) working as a finely tuned team to install all the new wiring harnesses in the car. In addition to the installation they cleaned, refurbished, and restored many electrical parts and pieces. As any of you know that have tackled a wiring project, this is a big job. Just looking at all the harnesses on the ground is an intimidating experience. My 11 year old grandson commented, when he looked at the still somewhat disassembled project, “Grandpa, I don’t think this car will ever go back together.” Well it IS going back together.
After the wiring was installed, we fired the motor. What a gigantic roar from the big 303 cubes without any exhaust system yet in place. It may have been 35 years since the engine had actually been running. Suffice to say, that these guys were invaluable to the project. Their knowledge and commitment were unbelievable. Thanks Don, Bill, Charles, Terry, and Mahlon. I’ll keep you updated as this project moves toward completion.
Time to start thinking about the 2014 national meet to be held in Carson City, Nevada. If you are thinking about attending, stay tuned for information coming out after the first of the year.
Phil Fischer is already hard at work for the 2015 meet to be held in Peoria, Illinois. This looks to be a June meet as have the last several. Not too early to begin planning.
Fall brings on the time to get the Olds ready for mothballs. Hope that it has been a great season for you.

Happy Oldsmobiling
Larry
