President's Message: Jim Schultz
January 2014 Runabouts to Rockets

Welcome to 2014 and a new year of Oldsmobiling. I want to introduce myself as your new President by giving some of my background and connection to Oldsmobiles.
I was born in Binghamton, New York to Fred and Margret Schultz. My Dad was a line mechanic for Gardner Oldsmobile in Binghamton, then Valley Motors in Endicott, New York. I literally hit the ground running with Oldsmobiles as my first ride in this world was in a 1949 “98” Holiday Coupe, the family’s first of many Oldsmobiles. My Dad was a horse trader so I was treated to a long procession of cars, mostly Oldsmobiles, through the fifties and sixties and on to the seventies.

In 1963 he bought R. C. Neilds Garage and started Vestal Service Center on Front Street in Vestal, New York. My family still runs it and February marked 50 years in business. From 1963 to 1982 I worked there after school and summers with a couple of years of community college then full time till 1982. Working in the garage, I had a front row seat to everything built. The Oldsmobiles were our favorite cars as we could see the engineered reliability every day. In 1979 we got our dealer license and started to buy and sell used cars. We turned a lot of people on to the Oldsmobile mark in those days. A 1957 Holiday Sedan started the collecting in 1967. We still have that car in my brother John’s showroom in Vestal. In 1982, Trudi and I moved to Arizona. After a 25 year industrial supply sales career, I retired. I have 33 Oldsmobiles from 1940 through 1976 to keep me busy. We hosted the 1995 and 2009 NAOC Nationals in Prescott, Arizona.
Doug Hone, our 2014 National Meet host, is planning a stellar meet for us in the western part of Nevada in the Minden/Carson City area. Stay tuned for more details in this and the next few issues of Runabouts to Rockets.

I want to thank Larry Reid for his four years as our President. It was my pleasure to work with him as vice president and will try to follow his and our other past presidents’ examples. Moving forward we want to improve Runabouts to Rockets with more content from our membership. If you have an idea for an article, some artifact that would make a good story/pictorial or just tell us about your Oldsmobile please submit to Wendy or myself. We can even help you with the write-up if you are not so inclined. This is your club and our common thread is Runabouts to Rockets—please help us keep it interesting. My door is always open here so if you have concerns, ideas or just want to talk Oldsmobile, email me or give me a call.
