June 2014 Runabouts to Rockets

President’s Message: Jim Schultz

June is finally here, bringing better weather to enjoy our Oldsmobiles, which should all be out of hibernation and going to shows or cruise nights. I hope a lot of them are heading to Minden, Nevada for our NAOC National Meet. Pinky and I will be there to enjoy our club camaraderie and planned events organized by our hosts, Doug and Kathy Hone.

I’ve had a few garage tours come by the Rocket Ranch as of late—the last one was about 25 Model T Fords from a couple of the state T organizations. When the tours come by, I empty the center part of the barn for display purposes. It gives me an opportunity to shuffle the deck and dig out some of the fleet that have been hibernating. Case in point my 1963 Super 88 station wagon. These Ionia bodied wagons are built like a brick excrement house. Mine—you can shut all four doors with your pinky and after 50 years on the planet and 60,000 miles, it does not rattle. With only 3878 produced, they are not commonly seen. My friend George Randle has a 1963 Dynamic 88 three speed on the column wagon here in Prescott. If you attended the 2009 Prescott NAOC Nationals, you saw both our Super 88s parked together—a rare sight indeed. George special-ordered his car new through a church group and it still sports its original paint. Although the Roto Hydramatic Slim Jim transmission in my car is not my favorite, the power and torque of that 394 cu. in. 330 HP makes this 4500 pound car move pretty good. It gets a lot of attention when I have it out. So drive your cars every chance you get. It puts smiles on peoples’ faces everywhere you go.

We are always looking for content for your magazine. We want to have a pictorial of members’ Oldsmobiles from the past. If you have a picture of your Dad’s, grandma’s, grandpa’s, aunt’s or uncle’s Olds from your childhood, scan it and send it in with a little story about it. I’ve submitted this one to start the ball rolling.
See you in Minden. Be there or be square.
