President's Message: Jim Schultz
November 2014 Runabouts to Rockets

November has arrived and those of us in the northern areas of our planet are starting to plan for car hibernation. Ethanol fuels require putting additives like Stabil for preventing fuel spoilage. There are two theories for long storage, the first is to fill the tank full so there would not be any condensation and the other is store as empty as you can. Where you live would determine which practice you follow. Here in Arizona, I run mine just about out of gas when I know it will hibernate. The climate here is very dry and with my inside storage I have never had an issue—I’m knocking on some wood as I say this. I also do this to keep the weight off the springs and tires.

Members in the northern humid climates may want to practice the scenario with Stabil. One other rule we had in New York is for the cars not in service that are not running was “When you change the clocks to daylight savings time, you roll the blocks.” We have used this practice so the engines get turned twice a year. Most of the time we turned them with the fan belts, otherwise you put a battery in and roll them that way. We have had cars sit for years and they never froze up. The best scenario for the winter months is to not hibernate the cars and drive them when weather permits. Drive to the store, out to dinner or to run errands. This way the car stays limbered up all year round.

Next month you all will be receiving a new membership directory in place of a December issue. At the board meeting in Minden the board voted to produce a 2015 NAOC Directory. We believe this is a useful tool for our Oldsmobile hobby to connect members with similar cars for exchange of knowledge and parts plus other benefits. I personally use mine all the time.

Look for the East Peoria, Illinois national meet information on antiqueolds.org and in the January issue. In early planning conversations I’ve had with meet host, Phil Fischer, this promises to be a stellar show. So with this being my last President’s message of 2014 I want to wish the membership of this great club an enjoyable Christmas season and even better new year.
