President's Message: Jim Schultz
March 2017 Runabouts to Rockets

Volume 36 #3

March! Another month closer to spring. Here in Arizona we have had a long stretch of cold and thankfully wet weather as I write this message in January. I again went down to Scottsdale on Thursday with my friend Don Petty and went to the Barrett-Jackson and Russo & Steel auctions. There were some really beautiful Oldsmobiles at both venues. Some were from my late friend Gordon Apker’s collection. Gordon was the seller of the F-88 at Barrett-Jackson a few years ago. My favorite car there was a 1956 98 Starfire convertible painted Coral and Black, a stunning car. There again were some substandard cars in the tents, some having so much washboard they could do your laundry as you passed by. Russo & Steel seemed to have a better level of quality percentage-wise although not as many cars. Their new location at the spring training ballparks just north of the Scottsdale Pavilions was a lot better than the out in the desert location at the intersection of Scottsdale Road and the 101 Freeway. I took many pictures there and we will do an auction report in a future issue of Runabouts to Rockets.

The May issue again will be our 50 and 75 year anniversary feature of 1967 and 1942 cars. Looking in the membership directory we have
numerous 1967 owners and some 1942s. Please send in stories of your cars or any memorabilia or material related to these years.

We are about four months out now from our National Meet in the Reading, Pennsylvania area hosted by Paul Hartlieb. We have a good number of members in that part of the world—lets have a great turn out for this meet. After all isn’t it better to see Oldsmobiles in person than in a magazine or on TV? Again please send in your entry forms sooner rather than later for better meet planning.

We have some Gathering Points coming right up this month. The first one is the 30th annual Arizona All Oldsmobile Show at the Scottsdale Pavilions March 25th. This show is a great excuse to escape the winter cabin fever I am sure many of you have been experiencing. On March 26th in the same location is the BOPC (Cadillac) show. It promises to be a fun car weekend. On April 1, the annual Oldsmar Days parade and show at the R. E. Olds Park in Oldsmar, Florida will take place. This is a Olds Club of Florida event that is always fun. A new Gathering Point will be held on April 21–23 in Gainesville, Texas. This zone meet is hosted by the North Texas Oldsmobile Club. If you have other notable shows that our membership may like to attend, send us the information and we will list it in our Gathering Points.
